Paul Karger, CFA
MANAGING PARTNER
As co-founder and Managing Partner of TwinFocus Capital Partners, Paul takes on the job of keeping the firm and its family of clients steering true north. Working shoulder to shoulder with entrepreneurs who found and build businesses has been his metier ever since he left university — and even before. Paul co-chairs the firm's Investment Committee and is very much at home in the maze of investment paths that confront clients looking to real estate, private equity, venture capital and hedge funds.
Prior to founding TwinFocus, Paul created and co-managed The Karger Group within UBS, which worked with select institutions and high-net-worth individuals on a fee basis. He advised on everything from basic investment strategy and asset allocation, to sounding out alternatives traditional and otherwise, to estate planning and even philanthropic giving. Before joining PaineWebber, UBS's predecessor firm, Paul earned his wings in investment banking by concentrating on the tangled economics of Life Sciences —“like studying a neural axon, where everything webs out in all directions like taffy,” he says. “If you survive the experience, you feel ready for brain surgery!” Even before entering the financial sector, Paul put his engineering studies to practice by advising a technology startup firm, and since then has helped shepherd a variety of successful start-up ventures at the advisory, executive and board level.
Paul holds the designation of Chartered Financial Analyst, and is a member of the CFA Institute, the Boston Security Analysts Society, the Investment Management Consultants Association and the Boston Estate Planning Council. Paul earned the designation of Certified Investment Management Analyst at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Finance, and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Manufacturing Engineering from Boston University.
Paul domiciles himself in Boston, shrine and altar of the Red Sox, where he lights his candles regularly, and spends time with local non-profits and charities as an advisor and board member, working to promote wellness and education in the arts at the Massachusetts College of Art & Design, The Epiphany School, the BridgeBoston Charter School, and Boston Medical Center. He is a member of The Metropolitan Club of New York, and is an avid collector of contemporary art (“but nothing so radical it sets fire to my living room!”), buckles on the skis in winter, and keeps up his training in order to compete in the martial arts of Muay Thai, Boxing, Kali, Fencing and Jun Fan/ Jeet Kune Do.
